Introducing Vectorwise 2.5 – The Fast Just Got Faster

Last week, Actian announced the new release of their record-breaking performance database, Vectorwise 2.5, now even more well-equipped to tackle Big Data. Delivering better manageability and faster performance, the new version will help companies realize the value of their data and execute on business opportunities in real time.

Meet Vectorwise

In case you’re hearing about Vectorwise for the first time, Vectorwise is Actian’s record-breaking performance database that helps organizations take action on Big Data. Released almost two years ago, the database has made tremendous progress in helping businesses gain new insights and drive operational efficiencies. As the business world developed data solutions at a rapid pace, Vectorwise continued to amaze by achieving record-breaking performance for the TPC-H benchmark, establishing itself as an industry best in speed and affordability.

Vectorwise 2.5 – What’s New?

  • Better manageability and faster performance. Vectorwise 2.5 offers faster performance while requiring less hardware than traditional databases. New features such as Predictive Buffer manager further enhance performance on concurrent queries. In-memory updates are now performed at a more granular level for faster and more efficient inserts and updates. In addition, improved Parallel Execution exploits the full potential of multiple CPU cores for faster performance on more types of queries.
  • More flexibility. To further enable better manageability, Vectorwise 2.5 allows users to store data in multiple files and locations. Flexible Storage Management enables users to store data on multiple physical locations, providing more flexibility when disk space is running low, while storing more frequently used data on faster disk drives for better accessibility. Unused data can be dropped to limit storage utilization. Vectorwise 2.5 also offers better multi-lingual support with automatic transliteration that extends beyond previous character sets.
  • Now bundled with Actian Director. Vectorwise 2.5 introduces new Java-based tools that offer a single management console (GUI) and new interface designed to work with current and previous Vectorwise and Ingres databases. The new Java-based tools are available for Linux and Windows, enabling the flexibility to perform common database administration tasks against multiple environments from a single console.

Missing/Inaction

Dolphin Synchronicity

My summer Sundays usually start with a walk along the shores of the mighty Atlantic Ocean.  Yesterday I was shocked to be joined by a school of dolphins who were soaring into the air in a remarkable show of synchronicity.  It was honestly like they were in training for the synchronized swimming event in the upcoming Olympics.  We rarely get to see dolphins on the shores of New York so I decided to take a series of action shots.  iPhone users will understand that in bright daylight you point your iPhone at where you think the action is happening and hope for the best.   Hence the photo above of a once in a lifetime spectacle.  What?  I missed it completely?  How could that happen?

The point of the story?   Business users often point their business intelligence tools blindly at where they think the action is happening within their data and have similar outcomes.   Action Apps and the Actian Cloud Action Platform are designed to avoid this.

CMOs need to be Chief Consumers of IT Budgets to Win

I recently read an article in Forbes Right Now by Lisa Arthur, quoting Gartner’s statistics that CMOs will be outspending CIOs on IT in the next 5 years, driven by the inexorable rise in on-line business and Big Data.  While I agree with her premise, I would say, that 5 years is too long! Companies that have not invested in Social Analytics in the next 24 months will lose market competitiveness.

The commercial drive to reach global markets without scaling costs, the consumers’ need for instant gratification when purchasing, the marketer’s need for faster campaign feedback to fine tune their segmentation and many more other business pressures makes on-line marketing the obvious route to their clients for many businesses.

This in turn has resulted in a glut of raw data on our markets, addressable segments, client buying patterns, their on-line interactions and their loyalty scores.  In addition, when used with their information on public and social media sites, we can not only ascertain their preferences, their hobbies, and their friends but know what they are doing and exactly where they are at any given time.  What would you do different if you knew your top client was in your (e)store right now or a perfect profile prospect was researching your product category?

This is clearly a gold mine for any organization able to mine the information for nuggets they can use to target their prospects and hone their messages. It is the new way to understand and address your markets and figures suggest organizations are starting to see the light.  Gartner predicts 2012 high tech marketing budgets have grown in the range of 9% to 11% compared to IT budget growth of only 4.7%.  CMOs are directing these increases to investment in Social Analytics by implementing marketing automation, location based services, social media monitoring tools, tweet aggregators and analysers, sentiment and trend predictors, and Social CRM methods in order to understand and communicate with their clients on-line. In addition they will demand access to high performance, affordable analytical software like Vectorwise to be able to analyse billions of rows of data in seconds to decide which segments prefer their products, the profitability of each client, the exact price required to shift the inventory and a myriad of other metrics necessary to drive their business.

Today only 30% of companies (Actian being one of them) are executing a plan to get tooled up. These companies will have a head start as they start to learn and educate their clients to interact on-line, and their CMOs will not only be empowered with the entire  client experience but also the key data to decide which products to kill, which markets to invest in, which clients to nurture and those to abandon to maximize profits.

The rest will have to move or be left behind – and it will happen a lot sooner than five years. The adoption is already accelerating to an inflection point where on-line will be the only route to market and a corporation’s digital marketing strategy will be a fundamental driver to business growth (and a seat on the board for the CMO – but that’s another blog!).

A Pizza The Action….App

We’ve done such a great job on the messaging of Action Apps that now every time one of my friends sees an app that combines real time information and activity it’s immediately labelled an Action App.   The latest addition to the hall of fame is the “Domino’s Tracker” App.   It keeps the diner updated every step of the process, from the order acknowledgement right through to delivery.   It’ll even let you know if “Martin” dropped your pizza taking it out of the oven and has to redo it.  It’s a remarkably simple app that had me, and some drunk and hungry friends, enthralled for 24 minutes last Friday night.  This app turned the mundane task of ordering a pizza into something I’m rather looking forward to doing again .  Transforming the work life with business equivalents is really what Action Apps is all about!

PS: No kangaroos were injured in the making of the pizza, Marty!

The Land Down Under

A few years ago I  blogged about my first visit to Australia.  Australia is truly beautiful and overflowing with natural resources, and the fact that the only souvenir I brought home from my visit was a pair of kangaroo balls continues to be a source of shame.   OK I admit it, I know no shame; the souvenir is proudly displayed in my glass display case in my living room.

The Ingres 10S launch got us some press coverage in a specialist geospatial publication as well as in the trade press in Australia.  Given their abundance of natural resources, Australia presents a massive opportunity for us to provide a cost effective alternative for esri users with an eye on the bottom line.

Tyler Mitchell and I are repeating our Ingres 10S webinar in a timezone more amendable to our antipodean friends, on May 23rd.   Details and registration available here.
