Study Proves Most Important Factor in Big Data: Speed and Size – Complexity biggest obstacle

In an effort to gain more insight into the complex world of big data, we conducted a survey with big data users in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific and posed a number of questions related to their company’s’ big data demands. In total, our survey reached almost 100 CIOs and CTO across the globe and we’d like to share the BIG results with you now.

As expected, speed is an important factor. Of all individuals surveyed, 33% reported a demand for analytical queries to quickly run and return results within 1-5 seconds while 77% reported a demand for results [...] Continue Reading…

5 Trends Vectorwise Has Spawned in the Market

This time last year, in my blog article entitled: “VW World Records – So What?”, I predicted Vectorwise’s record breaking price performance would deliver break-out value to many businesses. I argued that with Vectorwise’s ultra high performance at a ultra low cost, even a 200-person company can now leverage Intel’s multi-billion dollar R&D investment in their chip technology to gain affordable performance for a whole range of tasks hitherto out of their reach . This opens up a whole new world of possibilities – from being able to compete with larger or more established competitors to accessing brand new [...] Continue Reading…

CMOs need to be Chief Consumers of IT Budgets to Win

I recently read an article in Forbes Right Now by Lisa Arthur, quoting Gartner’s statistics that CMOs will be outspending CIOs on IT in the next 5 years, driven by the inexorable rise in on-line business and Big Data.  While I agree with her premise, I would say, that 5 years is too long! Companies that have not invested in Social Analytics in the next 24 months will lose market competiveness.

The commercial drive to reach global markets without scaling costs, the consumers’ need for instant gratification when purchasing, the marketer’s need for faster campaign feedback to fine tune their [...] Continue Reading…

SkyInsight

The news is full of disruptive events in the world this week be they the uprisings in the Middle East or the volcano in Iceland to the Tornadoes in Missouri. Actian too has been responsible for some disruptive activity that we believe will be far more constructive to the industries we serve. VectorWise breaking two more non-clustered benchmark records, the unveiling of our cloud strategy in March, and today, announcing the availability of SkyInsight, our first cloud-based managed service.

What I found intriguing about the launch of SkyInsight were the results of a survey we conducted over the last [...] Continue Reading…

More world records for VectorWise…so what?

Today in record-breaking news, Chiddy Bang, a rapper broke an all time high record for the longest freestyle rap – rhyming for just over 9 hours. I’m not sure who Chiddy is as I don’t follow rappers and their record-breaking rhyming, but I did find one point of this story worth reciting.  The previously held record was 9 hours, 15 minutes and 15 seconds. Chiddy was able to break the record by adding an additional 3 minutes and 7 seconds to the previous best. I guess that’s quite a feat when you are freestyle rapping, but the results just [...] Continue Reading…

OPENing in the Cloud

In theory cloud computing should be a development playground for Actian’ partners and customers.  By its very nature open source and innovation should be at the heart of cloud computing, however in the past few months I have started to become concerned that actually the cloud could be “the mother of all lock-ins”.

That term came from a conversation with Jim Whitehurst, Red Hat’s CEO.  He is worried, as we at Actian are that enterprises could fall into the traps that proprietary monoliths lay to get them signed up to a technology infrastructure which has no easy way out, huge [...] Continue Reading…
